Dr. Van Cott conducts research on ethnic politics, social movements, indigenous peoples, political parties, and institutional reform in Latin America. She is author of Radical Democracy in the Andes (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming fall 2008), and From Movements to Parties in Latin America : The Evolution of Ethnic Politics (Cambridge University Press 2005), winner of the "2006 Best Book on Comparative Politics" award of the APSA Organized Section on Race, Ethnicity and Politics, and a 2006 "Choice Outstanding Academic Title." She also wrote The Friendly Liquidation of the Past: The Politics of Diversity in Latin America (University of Pittsburgh Press 2000), and edited Indigenous Peoples and Democracy in Latin America (St. Martin's Press 1994), and she has published over 40 articles on ethnic politics in edited volumes and journals, such as Comparative Political Studies, Studies in Comparative International Development, The Journal of Democracy and Latin American Research Review. She was a Fulbright Fellow in 1997 (Bolivia, Colombia) and has been awarded grants and fellowships by Notre Dame's Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Harvard University's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, and the United States Institute of Peace.
