David L. Richards

Associate Professor

Dr. Richards holds a joint appointment in the Department of Political Science and the Human Rights Institute.

His work is focused on human dignity.

He is Co-Founder and Co-Director of the CIRI Human Rights Data Project (www.humanrightsdata.org), which annually rates government respect for 15 internationally-recognized human rights in 195 countries.

His current book project is The Stealth Pandemic: Violence Against Women, Law & Practice, co-authored with Jillienne Haglund of Florida State University, and to be published by Paradigm Publishers. This book examines domestic laws addressing five types of violence against women in 196 countries.

Other current projects of his include:

• A dignity-based critique of "human security"
• A study of mental health and security (with Megan Berthold of University of Connecticut)
• A rights-based examination of political will, state capacity, and small-scale fisheries governance (with Robert Pomeroy and Benjamin Carbonetti of University of Connecticut)
• A study of partisan identification and support for torture in the U.S.A. (with Mary Anderson of The University of Tampa)
