Graduate Studies in Political Science

The Department of Political Science at the University of Connecticut offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These programs are designed to prepare political scientists for teaching, research and management positions in the public and private sectors. 

The graduate curriculum of the Department of Political Science is structured to serve the individual needs of students as they prepare for the variety of opportunities that the field offers. Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of the dynamics and institutions of political life and learning the methods necessary for empirical research and analysis. Graduate students receive a great deal of individual attention and are able to work closely with faculty members. It is also possible for students to earn interdisciplinary degrees and to work in other departments. 

M.A. programs can be arranged through the Center for European Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies. These programs normally include language training as well as courses drawn from the Departments of History, Sociology and Economics. The facilities of the Institute for Social Inquiry provide an excellent opportunity for students to shape their graduate work so that they are able to master the techniques of survey research through participation in the ongoing studies of The Roper Center and CONNPOLL.
